Pirates Getting Some of Their Own Medicine

When Greenheart Games launched Game Dev Tycoon in April, a metagame in which you are a game developer trying to grow a successful business, they decided to stay one step ahead of pirates looking for a free version: they immediately released a cracked version on popular torrent sites... with one slight modification. Players of the cracked version started to notice after a while that it was incredibly hard - impossible in fact - to further grow their business because their products were downloaded illegally in huge numbers, resulting in lots of gameplay but very little income. The hilarious result is that people playing the cracked version started to complain and wondered how they could stop those annoying pirates.

It's a delightfully creative yet bittersweet experiment that shows how businesses are struggling with illegally distributed content. The entire story is posted on their website's blog.
