Annual data report on Europe’s video games sector launched at gamescom
BRUSSELS, 21st August 2025 - Video Games Europe and EGDF are proud to present this year’s annual report, All About Video Games – a comprehensive and definitive picture of Europe’s video games sector – in revenue, employment and in player numbers. Compiled with data provided by Ipsos and GSD as well as by Video Games Europe and EGDF members, here are the highlights:
Highlights:
- ○ Revenue has increased by 4% since 2023 to 26.8 bn Euros in key markets[1]
- ○ 54% of Europeans aged 6-64 play video games
- ○ 45% of video game players in Europe are women
- ○ 75% of video game players in Europe are adults and the average age is 31
- ○ The overall workforce in Europe is up by 1.8%, compared to 2023, to 116,419
- ○ Women represent 24.9% of the workforce
Video Games Europe Chair Hester Woodliffe said: “Over the past five years, our sector has continued to grow, contributing to Europe’s economy and employing a highly skilled workforce. With the right support from policy makers, including EU’s recent skills and education strategy to close the skills gap; recognition of the value of flexible and nimble self- and co-regulation, and with support for innovation, IP creation and new business models… then our sector can aspire to lead globally.”
EGDF President Hendrik Lesser said: “Europe is now home to 6,000 studios, and 90% of our revenue is digital, highlighting the successful digital transformation of the sector. Our technologies are also driving innovation across other creative and traditional industries. We offer Europe a unique opportunity: to empower digital citizens, to grow a competitive creative economy, and to lead the global digital transition. We ask for recognition of our sector’s distinct needs and strategic growth potential, backed up with the right policy environment to thrive on the global stage.”
Highlights continued:
Europe’s video game players enjoy games across a variety of devices
- 71% play on smartphones or tablets (vs 68% in 2023)
- 59% play on consoles (vs 56% in 2023)
- 43% play on PC (vs 46% in 2023)
- Playtime continues to be situated around 9 hours/weekly
Revenue split by source:
- Digital revenue: 90% (85% in 2023)
- Physical revenue: 10% (15% in 2023)
Revenue split by device:
- Console: 38% (41% in 2023)
- Smartphone/Tablet: 44% (41% in 2023)
- PC: 15% (14% in 2023)
- On-demand/streaming: 4% (3% in 2023)
